Flash floods in Hyderabad | October 2020

 

In the last two decades, several major Indian cities such as Mumbai, Srinagar, Chennai and Jaipur, have been victims of flash-floods. In October 2020, Hyderabad faced severe flooding.

Torrential rains poured which caused many lakes to flood the streets of 144 colonies in the city. With water reaching over 6ft inside people's homes, over 35,000 families struggled to keep their heads above water. Over 85 human lives were lost apart from countless wildlife deaths. Official estimates peg loss at Rs.5000 crore in the city.

This caused devastation to the poorest of the communities, refugees, and migrants who came to the city in search of a better livelihood. This led to conflict and animosity amongst these communities and gave rise to several various issues.
